Gabriel's sledge, and most big heavy weapons, are actually terrible. The various 1h blunt baton weapons are incredible, especially with the magic wand mod. If you do go 2h, metal kanabos are rare but very good, and bo staves are the absolute pinnacle- they can put a hurting on your stamina, but have incredible dps and good reach.
Firearms are weapons that fire bullets, so a gun basically. You first get to use weapons (unless you're lucky and find one sooner) in Act 2, when you're exploring the slums. They are not common to begin with, but as you explore more and find more survivors, you'll get more ammo and then you'll find them quite often.
